&rea Is Priceless!
"This ring is intended to recognize the hard work and ingenuity of &rea, Queen of WebRing! If &rea has ever helped you, or answered a question for you, or tolerated your ignorance of Webring, or pointed you in the right direction, or fussed at you for asking a question in the Managers' Forum which was covered in the WebRing User's Guide, you should seriously consider joining this ring as one small way of saying "Thank you." WebRing Profiles as well as Website pages accepted."
(Image and ring description lifted from the ring homepage in interest of promoting the ring.)
This is me.
I'd like to say that I appreciate the efficient way that webring operates. I see the resentment of webring changing links without permission nor notification of the "ring owners". Also there's the persistent criticism of current webring management in that the system
requires uniformity of look.
(Webring managers were once-upon-a- time true "webmasters" who paved the way to the
efficient and user friendly system we now enjoy today.)
|
This is me.
Please see the above links for the history. I find the technology a wonderful way to find sites pertainent to a subject. The community of webring are wonderful folks. I just wish certain webmasters (who are true webmasters) would be given courtesy as special exceptions by webring.com mgmt.
I am a webring.com fan in that the system is very user friendly and requires a minimum of time for me to manage "my" rings.

__________CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations on your recent adoption. And thank you for writing to tell
me.
If I can be of any assistance, particularly with answering any webring
questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I would be pleased to assist.
I also wanted to write you back to tell you about four things.
__________1: AN EXCELLENT EMAIL LIST FOR WEBRINGS
I want to alert you to an excellent email list for both RingMasters and ring
members, as well as others interested in the webring movement. It is the
World of Webrings list.
You can see it at:
There is a link there to the list archives, and a place for you to join.
Unlike some lists and forums, this one is about webrings of all different
systems. It also permits a very open and lively, uncensored discussion. And
it features some of the most prominent webring experts on the net.
__________2: MY WEBRINGS
I want to encourage you to check out MY webrings in the WebRing.com system
and perhaps join one.
You can see the complete list at
__________3: AN EXCELLENT ARTICLE ABOUT WEBRING.COM
I want to call your attention to an excellent article at Salon.com entitled
The Strange Saga of Yahoo and WebRing
or
In addition to quoting and linking to prominent members of the ringmaster
community, it quotes me! (Ok. I admit it; I'm tooting my own horn here). But
not just me. And it is not just about Yahoo. It also talks about the
transition away from Yahoo, and even quotes Tim (the new "owner").
It is a good article and I encourage you to check it out.
__________4: MY HELP PAGES
Finally, I want to let you know about my help section on the WebRing.com
System:
WebRing.com Help Pages
And, please, let me know if there is something YOU think I should add there.

Thank you for visiting our ring.
Welcome to my homepage for rings that I manage. To return to the theme of the ring you are navigating, just click the next or hub link on the navbar.
However, if you are interested in webring, I invite you to check out this page. Questions and comments are welcome. Click on above amsoil banner to email me.
Here is a list of webrings I belong to, and some of them I manage. I joined webring to get more traffic for my business, but now I'm an addict like the rest. :-)
In all earnestness, the ideal of webring is to have related sites linked together in a seamless circle. What's better than to surf through fascinating sites and end up right where you began? There is a wealth of webring resources. (See the James S. Huggins rings below.) Links for ring info & help at top of this page.

I wanted to write you back to tell you about three things.

Third, and finally, I wanted to let you know about a help section on
the New WebRing System:

something YOU think
he should add there. You can contact him here:

chucksgreenoil asks:
Should ringmasters have the ability to create categorized (sub-rings with specific matching themes). Without going to a hub or list page, the visitor can link from a general theme, large ring to a smaller, specific topic theme without leaving ring navigation? Is it important to preserve the purity of the ring navigation concept by not including ring site lists/ring hubs?
What is the difference between a ring membership and a link membership?
When does a webring stop being a webring, and just a link listing service?
Or does the fact that a system is called a ring makes it a ring, and how it is navigated is therefore irrelevant?
The navigation panels are there, and some surfers choose to use them
for navigating the webrings, while others obviously prefer to use the
list or HUB page. In both cases the member sites are visited because
of their ring memberships. Isn't that what really counts?
> 1) Others are of the opinion that the List page must remain,
> because it has always been there, and is what is expected of a
> webring. This despite the fact that the List page has now clearly
> replaced the Navpanel as the primary means to surf/navigate a
> webring (the Navpanel now just being a ring's logo/banner)?
Nobody has said that it *must* remain. Jeff and I mentioned a couple
of reasons for keeping it. You have made your point, and maybe some
ringmasters will prove to share your view and not use it, i.e. if the
system they are using allows that.
> 4) That validating sites on-the-fly, and skipping them if invalid
> would put too much load on the server, and therefore the only way
> to avoid these invalid sites is to use the List page and/or
> Next5/Prev5/Skip.
That's just my view with respect to Ringlink, which is a portable
webring program, designed to fit on various platforms, servers and
hosting accounts. It's still an interesting idea IMO, and developers
of other systems may have other views.
> 5) Best to manage a webring within the scope of the tools that are
> already provided by the various ring systems, and not create new
> ones, which would only cause confusion.
Best to first explore what can be done with the tools that are
currently present, and require new features only when a strong desire
arises among a large user group to do something that cannot else be done.
------------------------------
And now, a word from James S. Huggins regarding the commercial appeal of webring:
